England manager Roy Hodgson
has confirmed that Ashley Cole
will captain his side against the
Republic of Ireland on Wednesday.
Roy Hodgson has revealed that Ashley Cole
will lead out and captain England in the
friendly international against the Republic
of Ireland at Wembley on Wednesday
night.
Chelsea left-back Cole will be making his
102nd appearance for his country and has
been given the honour to commemorate
receiving his 100th England cap in a game
that is part of the Football Association's
150th anniversary celebrations.
Hodgson initially said Cole would only lead
the team out before passing on captaincy
duties to Frank Lampard, but then later
clarified that the defender would retain the
armband.
"Everyone is behind Ashley in this matter,"
Hodgson said. "We talked about it in the
past, his reluctance to play the captain's
role in front of the mass media, and we all
understand and accept that, but everyone
thought it would be nice if he put the
armband on and led the team out.
"'Frank was more than happy to pass on
that honour because we all believe he
deserves it. He has been a fantastic
servant not only to Chelsea and Arsenal
but England as well."
Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck
is a major doubt due to a knee injury but
Hodgson hopes he may be fit in time to
face Brazil in Rio on Sunday.
Hodgson also hinted that Liverpool's Daniel
Sturridge is likely to replace Welbeck up
front and make his full England debut.
Tottenham right-back Kyle Walker has
already been forced to withdraw from the
squad after suffering a fibula injury.
Republic of Ireland manager Giovanni
Trapattoni has announced his team to face
England and, as expected, Robbie Keane
starts.
The 32-year-old striker plays after his club
Los Angeles Galaxy gave him permission to
link up with the Irish squad, although he
only flew into London on Tuesday morning.
Trapattoni is without defender Marc Wilson
(calf), striker Kevin Doyle (Achilles), winger
Anthony Pilkington (knee) and midfielder
Paul Green (hamstring) who are all ruled
out.

Everton are set to meet with Roberto
Martinez in the next 48 hours to discuss
the vacant managerial position at Goodison
Park, according to Sky sources.
Martinez is a short-priced favourite with
bookmakers to succeed David Moyes as
Everton boss, although the Merseyside
club are also considering two other
remaining candidates.
The Spaniard has decided to leave Wigan
and has been given permission to speak to
the Toffees by Latics chairman Dave
Whelan.
Martinez told Whelan at a meeting on
Tuesday that he wanted to move on after
four years at the helm.
Whelan will not stand in the way of the 39-
year-old, who led Wigan to a memorable
1-0 victory over Manchester City in the FA
Cup final before they were relegated from
the Premier League, but he will demand a
reported £2million in compensation.
"Roberto wants to move on and I have got
to accept it," said Whelan.
"Everton rang me and I said they have
permission to talk to him. I would never
stop Roberto talking to football clubs.
"We will let him go but he's on a 12-month
rolling contract so if he moves someone
will have to buy him out of his final year.
"We are still friends, we will always be
good friends and he will always be a friend
of Wigan Athletic."
Whelan said the club's relegation had been
the main factor in Martinez's decision to
seek a new challenge.
"He does not feel he is up to the task of
getting us back into the Premier League,"
added the Wigan chairman.
"Football is football and I understand
where he is coming from.
"Everton are a nice club and have a great
chairman in Bill (Kenwright) and he is an
honest man."

The answer to the question will
now never be known -- for many football
fans had been wondering how Borussia
Dortmund's Mario Gotze would fare when
taking on future employers Bayern
Munich in Saturday's Champions League
final at Wembley.
After both German teams booked their
place in the final, supporters, journalists
and former players had asked how the
20-year-old would handle a situation
whereby he had the chance to shatter
Bayern's Champions League dream but
such thoughts now lie idle.

Last month, it was announced the
midfielder was joining Dortmund's biggest
Bundesliga rivals after the recently-
crowned German champions activated his
release clause with a bid of $47 million.
The move was criticized by many
Dortmund fans, disappointed that a player
who had been developed by the club's
academy since the age of 8 was being lost
so readily and by the timing of the news.
The announcement came on
the eve of the opening leg of
Dortmund's Champions
League semifinal with Real
Madrid, which the 2012
Bundesliga champions
ultimately won 4-3 on
aggregate to reach their first
final in 16 years.
Gotze was highly influential
in the first leg but tore his
hamstring 14 minutes into
Dortmund's 2-0 defeat in the
return fixture at the
Bernabeu on April 30 -- a
game that has proved to be
his last for the club.
"It was my big aim to play in
the final and I have been
working hard to reach that in
the last few weeks,"
Dortmund's website quoted
the German international as
saying on Wednesday.
"I am incredibly sorry that I can't help
the team in this really important game. I
have full confidence in the team and will
of course be going to London to support
the boys from the sidelines."
The attacking midfielder had maintained
hopes of playing in London until Tuesday,
when he managed an hour of training in
his first full session since April until an
adverse reaction curtailed his dream --
and so perhaps his chances of repairing
his damaged relationship with some fans.
For while the absence of Dortmund's
main playmaker represents a major
tactical blow for coach Jurgen Klopp, it has
been welcomed by a section of the club's
supporters.
The intensity of feeling following the April
announcement found some fans burning a
replica of his Dortmund jersey in online
videos and others labeling him 'Judas'
among other protests.

When hosting Bayern in a league match
on May 4 that ended 1-1, Dortmund fans
unveiled a massive banner reading 'The
quest for cash reveals how much heart
you really have, get lost Goetze'.
"What you find on the internet is that
some Dortmund fans are not that
disappointed that Gotze cannot play," said
Peter Penders, a sports journalist with
German newspaper Frankfurter
Allgemeine.
"A lot of them never wanted to see him
in a Dortmund jersey again as they no
longer saw him as the club's player after
he signed for Bayern."
"He had grown up at Borussia
Dortmund and was seen as a
player wholly created by
Borussia Dortmund, which is
why they were so
disappointed."
When the transfer was
announced, the charismatic
Klopp revealed that Gotze's
departure had hinged on the
fact that former Barcelona
Pep Guardiola, who will take
charge of Bayern after this
season, had identified him as
a key player.
"The reason Gotze is leaving?
He is the favorite transfer of
Guardiola," Klopp told
reporters. "So if it's anyone's
fault, it's mine. I cannot
make myself 15 centimeters
smaller and learn Spanish.
Gotze wants to work with
this extraordinary coach that
is Guardiola."
Despite the apathy of some
supporters, Dortmund - who
finished runner-up to Bayern
in this season's German
championship -- will miss the
creativity of a player with 12
league goals and 13 assists in both the
Bundesliga and Champions League this
season.
"Gotze's absence is a major problem in
attack because they have to change some
other things," added Penders.
"Perhaps Marco Reus will take his
position behind striker Robert
Lewandowski, with Kevin Grosskreutz
filling Reus' usual position on the wing."
Dortmund are also waiting on the fitness
of defender Mats Hummels, who is
receiving intense treatment on the ankle
he damaged in Saturday's surprise home
defeat by Hoffenheim.
Meanwhile, one of the players Gotze will
link up with next season says Bayern must
atone for final defeats to Inter Milan in
2010 and to Chelsea in their own stadium
last year.
"We have to win for the fans, the club
and the whole team," said Franck Ribery,
who joined the Bavarian club six years
ago.
"This is our third time, we have more
experience, know what it means to play
in a final, so it's nothing new for us,
everyone knows what they have to do
and how we have to play against
Dortmund.
"The defeat to Inter was hard, but the
loss to Chelsea really hurt, it was a huge
shock for everyone," added the French
winger.
European football's governing
body UEFA says it will continue to
monitor security ahead of Saturday's
Champions League final in London.
The British government held an
emergency meeting on Thursday following
the daylight murder of a British soldier in
the capital the previous day.
Owned by the English Football
Association, Wembley is hosting the final
of the prestigious European club
competition for the second time in two
years, but on match day it is UEFA which
assumes responsibility for the stadium in
north London.
UEFA said it was "confident" that the all-
German final between Bayern Munich and
Borussia Dortmund would not be affected
by wider events in London.
"We obviously have a lot of security
measures in place," a UEFA spokeswoman
told CNN. "We are confident they will
guarantee there is a positive atmosphere
in the city as well as inside the stadium.
"As for each final we contact the [local]
police and security is in their hands. We
will of course be monitoring the situation.
"Each time we hold a final we
discuss various security
matters [with the venues]
where we discuss the
number of stewards, security
and police officers required."
London's Metropolitan Police
Service has not changed the
"threat level" for the final
since the murder, though the
police will continue to keep
their plans under constant
review.
"In light of events in
Woolwich we have looked at
our policing plan for the
Champions League final,"
said Chief Superintendent
Julia Pendry, who is heading
up the policing operation for
the final, said in a statement.
"We would like to reassure
travelling fans and visitors to
London that there is nothing
at this stage to suggest any
threat to this event and an
appropriate policing response
will be in place to ensure the
safety and security of those
who attend the event.
"We are working closely with British
Transport Police and our other emergency
service partners and as always our plans
are flexible and kept under continuous
review."
Firearms officers are used as a response
service by the Metropolitan Police Service
and would not routinely be on patrol at
events such as Champions League finals.
Security in London has come under
renewed focus after a British soldier was
brutally killed close to barracks in
Woolwich, south London on Wednesday.
There has been increased security at army
bases around London amid fears of
additional attacks, but Prime Minister
David Cameron urged people to "go
about their normal lives."
Borussia Dortmund has not changed its
advice to fans traveling to London ahead
of Saturday's match.

The friendly match
against the Tricolore of
Mexico has thrown up
some interesting and
baffling questions for
the Stephen Keshi -led technical crew of the
Super Eagles. What with the withdrawal of
Mikel Obi and most significantly the pulling
out of the squad of Victor Moses, for the
friendly, World Cup qualifiers and the Fifa
Confederations Cup. It will be interesting
to see what Keshi will do shod of his two
most potent attacking players from the last
Nations Cup –Moses and Emmanuel
Emenike .
Because it is a friendly that has only pride
at stake, the coach will want to test run the
players that are in camp to gauge the
preparedness of the team for the must-win
match against the Harambee Stars on June
5 in Nairobi.
And this is where it gets doubly interesting
– Moses, an orthodox winger who plays like
an inverted striker is missing while the
natural cover; Ahmed Musa has not been
called up while Ejike Uzoenyi, who could
have been the back-up is also absent.

So the only player that has the capacity to
fit on either wing is Varese’s Nnamdi
Oduamadi , who shot into the
consciousness of Nigerians with his

stead. Now will he be able to stand the
heat?
With two goals in 16 league appearances
for Serie B side Varese, the on-loan Milan
player has been on the fringes of the
limelight for some time now and it now
seems that the perfect opportunity to state
a readiness to be among the best has
finally come.
The goal against Kenya would have done
greatly for his confidence. He has the
ability to take a game by the scruff of the
neck and that is what he has to do – to earn
the respect of the coaches, his team mates
and the insufferable millions of Nigerian
fans, who will be watching and waiting to
cheer the next big thing after Moses.
Moses led the way to the Promised Land in
February; Oduamadi has to make sure that
he walks the same path to greatness in
June.
